Is there a Top Geeky Chef?

On tonight's Top Chef finale (no spoilers here, don't worry), Richard bragged that he was using liquid nitrogen to make ice cream, and that "only a dozen top chefs in the country" do that sort of thing.

Top chefs, pffft. Even I've made liquid nitrogen ice cream on multiple occasions. In fact, other than procuring liquid nitrogen, it's one of the easiest desserts out there. Clearly Richard should have noted that "a dozen top chefs and thousands of physics geeks" use liquid nitrogen in their cooking.

Good point. I'm guessing the physics geeks have an easier time getting their hands on liquid nitrogen than the chefs do in most cases. (Am now having P2 flashbacks of liquid nitrogen being dumped on the floor. Man, that freaked me out.)

"Look at all the dust particles move!!!" Professor Farrell was awesome.

I remember in our circuits lab, one of the final project choices was to build a music synthesizer on which we could play, store, and play back a stream of music. We were allowed to pick any song except "Jingle Bells", which was an automatic F.

That gives me an idea for next time I'm injecting the cold load* at the CSO on Mauna Kea.... Mmmmm. What one will do to stay awake while observing...

* - consisted of dunking a felt pad into a barrel of Liquid Nitrogen and sticking it into the telescopes hardware. Yup, that's cutting edge.

"Injecting the cold load" does sound much classier than "putting a piece of cold felt in the hardware". Your secret is out!
